Depression is one of the most prevalent mental illnesses on college campuses. According to the 2011 NCHA (National College Health Assessment), 30% of college students reported feeling "so depressed that it was difficult to function". Depressive symptoms can often co-occur with substance abuse and anxiety, and with the various stressors that exist among college students, students with depression are very much at risk for succumbing to the pressure and excessive stress. Depression is also a major risk factor for suicide, which is now the third leading cause of death teens and young adults aged 15-24.
Clearly, there is a large need for support for these students and Emory is no exception. The stigma that exists surrounding mental illness on Emory's campus also makes it difficult for students to seek help, or even feel comfortable finding help. My goal and the aim of this website is to educate those who are struggling about the resources they have at Emory, as well as trying to change some of the current practices that are in place that are not serving students in the best way through my own research.
